A unique aspect of DBMI is service responsibility in real world health care provider organizations in informatics. Several faculty members lead critical day-to-day operational and long-term strategic planning activities in Information Technology departments in hospital and clinic environments. Their experience in on-the-ground challenges in service design and delivery helps propose and design indormatics research in real problem domains. Their work data are used to investigate research hypotheses. Researchers conduct research discovery on real data, propose and help implement practical solutions, and construct evaluation on efficiencies in care process and on outcomes in care impact. In addition to research, students take advantage of service component by interacting in real world Information Technology management issues, a critical skill for them to be informatics leaders of tomorrow.
