I am a PhD student in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University in New York City. I graduated from Colby College in 2005 with a degree in Computer Science. Having always had an interest in medicine, I found that Clinical Informatics was a great match for me.

What is Biomedical Informatics?

Biomedical Informatics is much more than just the application of Computer Science and Software Engineering to Medicine. It is a multidisciplinary field that draws from Behavioral Psychology, Biology, Statistics, Computer Science and Medicine. Briefly, Biomedical Informatics is the scientific field that deals with the storage, retrieval, sharing, and optimal use of biomedical information, data, and knowledge for problem solving and decision making.

What is Clinical Informatics?

Clinical Informatics is the scientific study of the effective use of information in patient care, clinical research and medical education. Users of clinical information systems include physicians, nurses, dentists, technicians, therapists and social workers, as well as patients and consumers. The ultimate goals of clinical informatics are to streamline the processes of patient care, to provide clinicians with accurate data in a timely manner, improve the quality of care, and to reduce costs.
