Long Version

Currently, I am a second year Ph.D. candidate in the Biomedical Informatics program at Columbia University, New York.  My research interests include computer science and bioinformatics, with a focus in the computational human genetics side of bioinformatics.  My current project involves identification of cancer genes using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and copy number variation information.

In March of 2005, I graduated from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) with an MS in Computer Science.  My thesis was completed in the bioinformatics area under the guidance of Pavel Pevzner.  The thesis involved analyzing genomes to discover evidence of Whole Genome Duplication events.

Prior to UCSD, I attended Stanford University from 1998 to 2002 as an undergraduate and studied Computer Science.  I especially loved my time there, having been awed by the awesome quality of education, research, activities, and campus aesthetics (e.g. palm trees on campus).  In addition, I formed some of my closest friendships during this time and hope to stay in touch with my friends for years to come.

Roughly between UCSD and Columbia, I worked as a Software Engineer at Akonix Systems in downtown San Diego (bet. 2004 - 2006) and was in technical charge of the Akonix L7 Enforcer product.

Research Interests:

My overarching areas of interest are computer science and bioinformatics.  More specifically, I am interested in drawing upon computer science techniques to develop algorithms, techniques, and tools that: 1) address problems in the biological and/or biomedical sciences, and 2) contribute back to the field of computer science in some way.

In other words, I hope that my future algorithms can be sufficiently abstracted away from biological problems such that they can be generalized to solve other types of problems.  This is likely an idealistic goal, and I realize that achieving it will involve a tremendous amount of work...

That being said, my (more) specific interests in bioinformatics are: computational genetics, comparative genomics, phylogenetic reconstruction, and motif discovery

Personal Information:

I am also vegetarian, save for eating eggs from time to time.  Cakes and cookies are too good to give up just yet...

Movie Quote:

"But if you make yourself more than just a man... If you devote yourself to an ideal, and if they can't stop you... then you become something else entirely..."

"Which is?"

"Legend, Mr. Wayne."

- exchange between Henri Ducard and Bruce Wayne, Batman Begins, 2005

I love that movie.
