Dr. Abdulaziz Alkattan, MD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Informatics at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. He is a board-certified general surgeon and clinical informaticist whose work sits at the intersection of clinical care, health systems, and data science. He completed his clinical informatics fellowship at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, completed his surgical residency at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, and holds a Master of Public Health in Healthcare Policy and Management from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. He is board certified in both General Surgery and Clinical Informatics.
Dr. Alkattan’s academic and research interests center on the application of artificial intelligence in clinical informatics and medical education. In his faculty role, he leads initiatives focused on innovation in AI-enabled clinical systems and educational tools, while contributing to the department’s teaching mission through curriculum development, mentorship of trainees, and collaborative research. His work emphasizes translating emerging technologies into practical, scalable solutions that enhance care delivery and support clinicians.
He is also engaged in advancing education around the responsible and safe use of artificial intelligence across the medical training continuum, including medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty. His work focuses on developing curricula, training frameworks, and evaluation approaches that equip clinicians with the knowledge and critical skills needed to effectively and thoughtfully integrate AI into clinical practice.
