Cimino/DBMI Honors Highlight 2019 AMIA Conference

The 2019 AMIA conference provided numerous DBMI trainees an opportunity to present their current research, while both past and present department members connected at the annual DBMI reunion inside the Georgetown Ballroom on Tuesday, Nov. 19.

Research

Six DBMI trainees gave oral presentations during the AMIA conference, held Nov. 16-20 in Washington D.C. The speakers, their titles and several presentation slides are available below.

Amelia Averitt: “Characterizing the Urban Opioid Epidemic Using EHR Data”

: “Learning Disease Phenotypes with Semi-Supervision”

Furthermore, Amanda Moy collaborated with nursing student Jessica Schwartz to place second overall in the Student Design Challenge. The team’s presentation was entitled “Synergizing Technologies To Facilitate Readiness In Initiating Dialogue On End-Of-Life Services (Strides).”

Trainees also presented their research during the multiple poster sessions throughout the week.

Honors

James Cimino, Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Informatics, earned the top honor bestowed at the annual AMIA Conference, the Morris Collen Award of Excellence (pictured, right). This award is the highest honor in informatics that is presented by the American College of Medical Informatics to an individual whose personal commitment and dedication to biomedical informatics has made a lasting impression on healthcare and biomedicine. Jonathan Elias, and Sarah Collins Rossetti collaborated with Jessica Schwartz in the Student Paper Competition and placed third overall with the paper “An Interprofessional Approach to Workflow Evaluation Focused on the Electronic Health Record Using Time Motion Study Methods.” Schwartz also earned the NIWG Student Award.

Neil Sarker, a 2004 Columbia graduate, earned one of the three AMIA Leadership Awards. 

Beatriz Ryan-Lora, a DBMI colleague at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, earned a Distinguished Poster Honor for “Reasons for Non-Participation in an Inpatient Acute Health Portal Randomized Controlled Trial among Hospitalized Patients.”
